I have heard about them laying off 1,000 workers (There are only 12,000) from the US posts in Korea for several weeks now. I have been advised there will be protests which will lock us down on post. I can understand why they are upset, I wouldn’t want to loose my job either. Gen. LaPorte awarded one person in yongsan recently for working for USFK for 50 years. He started working for the US when he was 17. The Korean war has only been over for 52 years, you can read more about that at the “Stars and Stripes“.
Now they are threatening to strike, and not just the little shoppette and PX workers. The Firemen, the health workers, everyone. Which could mean a lot of extra work for all of us. Things like cutting grass, painting, and KP will be done by soldiers. Making my life hell and everyone else here. We work enough doing stupid bullshit that is supposedly “Only in Korea, cause we never do this in the states”.
But the union also is making preparations to strike if U.S. Forces Korea’s proposal to lay off 1,000 Korean workers cannot be avoided, said Kang In-shik, the union’s president. The union also may try to persuade its emergency services workers  such as those in health care or firefighting, normally excluded from strikes  to join the picket line.
“Certain types of occupations such as fire service, communication, hospital, electricity, water supply are not permitted to strike,†Kang said through a translator on Wednesday. “But in case we have no choice but to resort to a tough and drastic measure, we are (considering a) full-scale strike regardless of any conditions. Because this is a life-or- death matter to us.â€Â
From the sounds of it though this isn’t an easy task for them to do this either, they have to get everyone in the union to agree on it, then they have to get permission from the Korean Government. The main reason for all of this though is the Korean government is giving us $60 Million less than what they gave us last year.
The tensions have come as the United States and South Korea are trying to agree on how much that nation should pay toward the $1.2 billion cost of maintaining USFK. Last year, South Korea paid about $621 million. This year, it has proposed cutting that amount by $60 million
Fuck the government do what the people want…, the US and Koreans…, Send the US troops back to the US.
